Deck Dungeons is an OSR hack for Dungeons and Dragons developed for OSR Jam III: Weird Small Games. The goal was to make an OSR game with a weird mechanic under 5,000 words.

Deck Dungeons uses a standard deck of playing cards for each player, from which they build a custom "character deck" to use during play. From there, Deck Dungeons does the following with the standard OSR formula:

  • d20 rolls are replaced with "tests" where the player chooses two cards from their hand and adds an attribute modifier.
  • Damage rolls are replaced by flat numbers based on the weapon or spell, but that damage can be halved, doubled, or quadrupled based on the cards played.
  • Monsters are simplified, mostly using their attribute scores as target numbers for the players.
  • Races, skills, and backgrounds are simplified into traits. When a trait applies, the test has advantage.
  • There are three classes: The tanky and tactical Warrior, the skilled and deadly Rogue, and the powerful and versatile Mage. Mages can be built a variety of ways, gaining different abilities based on their chosen casting attribute and spell schools.
  • Spellcasting has been overhauled to replace spells with spell schools to cast customizable spells on the fly and replaces expending spell slots with expending cards.

Deck Dungeons was built with 5e in mind, but any version of DnD should be easy to convert.
